Every motor controller consists of a solid state motor controller or a contractor, overload relays to protect the motor, fuses or circuit breakers so as to supply short-circuit protection and a disconnecting switch in order to isolate the motor circuit. Separate connectors enable 3-phase power so as to enter the controller. The motor is wired to terminals positioned inside the controller. Motor control centers provide wire ways for field control and power cables.

In a motor control center, each motor controller can be specified with lots of various options. MCC's generally sit on floors which are required to have a fire-resistance rating. Fire stops can be necessary for cables which go through fire-rated floors and walls.
